Travel Blues

Lest you, our gentle readers, think that our Vanuatu travels were full of nothing but erupting volcanos, amazing shipwreck dives, rainforest cave spelunking, and crazy land-diving locals, we thought we should mention the other side of our time on the islands. This is the aspect of our travel adventures that rarely gets documented on our blog because, well, it’s kinda boring. It’s when the glamour of international travel gives way to monotony, frustration, and the daily annoyances of being on the road. It’s when we start fantasizing about being back in our own home, eating a Mission burrito, and not having to worry about drinking out of the tap or where our passport currently is. It’s when we want to be anywhere but where we currently are.

Part of the reason we don’t mention this side of our trip very often is because we don’t want to seem like we’re whining. We know how lucky we are to be able to do a big trip like this, and we don’t want to be whiny babies about the occasional day or two that isn’t full of (to quote my first entry on this blog) unicorns and rainbows. But… we thought it would be good to occasionally call out these episodes of travel blues since they are a very real part of our trip. We had one of these days while we were on Tanna, when a combination of three weeks of battling heat and humidity, compromised immune systems, and the glacial pace of island time nearly got the better of us. I pulled out our Flip video that day so I could capture us in the midst of our travel malaise, and we thought we’d share our little film with all of you now. Enjoy!

Oh, and for the record, I don’t actually have any of the diseases mentioned in the clip. :)

Aw. You guys need to post more videos. They make me feel like you're here, so I don't miss you as much (that can be taken two ways...take it the good way!). This video in particular made me laugh and laugh. :) Hope things are getting better (I think they might be, but maybe too slowly??). I love you both!!!

I love that the faucet wasn't the right size/location/direction for the sink.

I hate flies too. I'd be right there with ya hiding in the room.

Thanks for sharing. Agree with Ginny it's great to see you guys even if you're a bit down.

Wow, you guys really went all out for Ilan's 30th birthday! The very day that you filmed yourselves wallowing in self pity, your boy was navigating his way through a Lustin-less milestone. Way to rise above the malaise and get in the celebratory spirit :)
In all seriousness, sorry to hear about the bad spell and glad to hear things are really trekkin' now! (get it? trekking? like you are, in Bhutan, right now?). P.S. Greg and Meredith, it was fun running into you guys at SPQR last night. Did you have the Meyer Lemon Risotto??
Can't wait to seeeeeeeeeee youuuuuuuuuuuuu, my Lustiny Lurchers!!!!!!!!!!
SMOOCHIES!!! s.

Sarah, Mere and I skipped the Meyer Lemon Risotto. That menu was seriously the most complicated I've ever seen. But I have to say the linguini with cocoa was just a-mazing. Loved that we ran into you out of the blue there.

Dustin, I love this FeedMyInbox site. Amazing. It lets me have email conversations with Sarah via the comments section of your travelogue. How convenient for me!

OK, I've been waiting for several days now and have to say I'm disappointed that Dustin didn't figure out a way to post to this blog from one of the huts along the trail to the Chomolhari base camp?!

Oh yeah, don't miss the new Subway that they put in by the river next to the Chorten. Great sandwiches...

Hey, weren't you guys looking for a good book to read a while back? Any interest in joining our group read of WAR AND PEACE this summer? Should be a lot of fun. Easy pace of 76 pages per week. Still plenty of time to join us.

See our reading group blog here: http://readingwarandpeace2010.blogspot.com/

Dear Tolstoy's Beard, who are you? Are you related to Barry Zito? How's the reading going? I don't think I'm up for War & Peace, but I would be more than happy to watch 'The Last Station' and discuss that with you. That seems like a lot less WORK.
